How to care for acrylic products

Sooner or later, anyone who uses acrylic products faces this question. It is a mistake to think that how long they last depends only on the quality of the material and on professional manufacture and assembly.

Nor should you assume that acrylic is cleaned the same way as ordinary glass or PVC. Careful use and gentle care are what keep an acrylic product looking as good as new for many years.

The good news is that acrylic has a very valuable advantage: it does not absorb dirt and is easy to wash, regaining its clarity and shine straight after cleaning, which takes no special effort. To avoid mistakes, we recommend following the guidelines below.

Cleaning acrylic the right way

  1. To remove dirt, use only soft, lint-free cloths that will not scratch the surface or leave streaks. Microfibre, flannel, cotton or felt cloths are all suitable.
  2. For more effective and safer care, the cloths should ideally be new and perfectly clean rather than reused. Tiny abrasive particles on a used cloth can scuff the surface, which will quickly turn matt and lose its shine. Special cloths for caring for acrylic products are also available.
  3. As a cleaner, you can use ordinary soapy water or any non-abrasive detergent. Then rinse off the excess with water and simply wipe the surface dry with a dry cloth.
  4. You can also use dedicated acrylic cleaners and antistatic products, available online. They are water-based with surfactants, repel dirt and prevent static build-up on the surface, and are non-toxic and environmentally safe. They come in spray bottles and are very convenient for regular use at home.

Never do this!

acrylic crazing caused by contact with an alcohol solution

  1. Clean acrylic with stiff sponges, paper, dry scratchy fabrics, dirty rags or other rough materials.
  2. Use dry powders, abrasive products or products containing aggressive chemicals (e.g. ammonia, alcohol, acetone or petrol-based). On contact with acrylic they cause scratches, scuffs, cloudy patches, streaks and cracks that simply cannot be removed.
  3. Ordinary glass cleaners are not recommended either, as they also contain ammonia, which causes micro-cracks in acrylic.

To sum up: how attractive acrylic products look and how long they last depend directly on how well you care for them. If you are interested in acrylic products, our online shop offers a very wide range. You can order clear and coloured acrylic products from us at an affordable price.
